Fans of the Star Wars universe had a few reasons to rejoice in April 2015. During the annual Star Wars Celebration in Southern California, two feature films were formally discussed: The Force Awakens, which will be a sequel episode following Return of the Jedi, as well as Rogue One, an anthology that will serve as a prelude to the classic A New Hope. The great announcements were not limited to films; a trailer for the new video game Star Wars: Battlefront was revealed, and it looks like it is going to be a smash hit for the Sony PlayStation 4.

It is important to remember that new Star Wars video game titles are now under the purview of Disney, which means bigger budgets for developers to work with. Game development studio DICE, a veteran of previous Star Wars titles is doing the right thing by going into the LucasArts and LucasFilm archives to get the right feel for the game, which unfolds during the original trilogy of Episodes IV to VI.

The Original Star Wars Atmosphere

Although Star Wars: Battlefront will be simultaneously released for the PS4, Xbox One and PC platforms on November 17th, the trailer suggests that the game intends to take full advantage of the PS4 graphics capabilities. Atmosphere is everything in the Star Wars universe, and it seems that Electronic Arts wisely chose DICE as the development studio to pull this off. The trailer starts with an Empire Star-class destroyer menacingly approaching Endor; below the ominous spaceship we get to see to Ewoks and rebels preparing to battle against Imperial forces.

Once a Storm Trooper gets a blaster shot right on his chest plate, it is clear that the developers are faithfully recreating the original film trilogy. The special effect of the laser shot and the sparks it produces as it hits the Storm Trooper armor is exactly what Star Wars fans need to get in the mood before The Force Awakens. Everything, from the landscapes to the sound effects and from the uniforms of the combatants to the voice-over work, is designed to evoke the magic created by LucasFilm, which issues final approval on all development updates.

Star Wars: Battlefront Gameplay

The mechanics of Star Wars: Battlefront are nearly identical to those of the successful Battlefield franchise. Early detractors have called the game a Star Wars Battlefield mod, which is a dismissive and unfounded statement. The concept may be similar insofar as both games being multiplayer shooters, but the inspiration and attention to detail being applied to Star Wars: Battlefront is unlike any other developed thus far.

The PS4 gameplay footage shows first-person perspective that look gorgeous and third-person views that are more tactical in nature. Jumping into the cockpit of X-Wing or Tie Fighters will be part of the experiences, and joining the Dark Side as Darth Vader or finding your own destiny as Boba Fett will be possible under the right circumstances.

To put it simply: the Star Wars: Battlefront trailer for the PS4 promises a video game experience like no other.
