What is the Future for World of Warcraft?

World of Warcraft is more than a decade old. When the game’s first released, it brought a lot of innovation to the MMORPG genre. The biggest innovation it brought was a new method of adventuring with a very straightforward quest giving system, which provided players with a way to constantly feel engaged with the game world through the tasks they were given. This is just one of the many things that make World of Warcraft the most successful MMORPG to date. This track record has made a lot of people wonder what Blizzard can do to help continue World of Warcraft’s success. One interesting change has been mentioned by Blizzard involves adding a new way for players to pay for their subscription.

Alternative Subscription Payment Method

While there’s been no official announcement as to how the system would work or even if it’s going to be implemented for sure, Blizzard has mentioned their interest in allowing players to buy game time tokens that they can then sell to other players in-game for gold. While the system isn’t anything revolutionary as many other MMORPGs have implemented something similar, it is an interesting development for World of Warcraft. This doesn’t mean that free-to-play World of Warcraft is coming. Blizzard has stated previously that they have no intention of adopting a free-to-play model and that their current subscription based payment model for the game is working well.

The Mythic Dungeon Difficulty

There’s a big addition to the game that’s going to be brought with the latest patch. A new dungeon difficulty is being added called mythic. This difficulty is only available for the dungeons that were added in Warlords of Draenor. For a long time, players have been requesting some other way to progress when they are max level. The mythic dungeon difficulty is aimed at providing these players with an alternative avenue for item progression other than raiding. The loot that is dropped during the dungeon is equivalent in power to the items that are dropped during a raid. Dungeons set to the mythic difficulty are on a one-week lockout just as raid dungeons are. This is to prevent one method of progressing from being faster than the other.

A New Zone and New Raid

The patch is also bringing other new content to the game. A new zone called Tanaan Jungle and new raid called Hellfire Citadel. You can access the new zone after your garrison level is three and you construct a shipyard. Once you do that, you simply have to accept the war council quest available at your garrison, and the zone will become available to you.
